Hey Coaches, I’m here on vacation (Holiday for Kiwi’s) in Hawaii, I've been doing plenty of surfing, running, swimming, eating and drinking, but because I love my job so much I’ve also found some time to experiment with the integration of artificial intelligence into our platform.
It’s all experimental at this point but the work I’ve been doing is focused on utilizing language models to generate workouts from natural language (typing text). Zwift is just the first use case I chose to experiment with. After this experimental work I'm pretty confident I can implement AI across many parts of the platform with the main goal of saving coaches time by augmenting their own skills and abilities. Essentially giving coaches super powers to do they things they already do but faster, easier and better. End result, spend more time doing the things you love.
In the video below I go through the tool and show you what's possible so far. I cover generating Zwift workouts but also the early stages of generating full training plans.
Even just using ChatGPT I’ve been able to generate some pretty good Zwift workouts. For instance, you can instruct it to design a 60-minute workout with a focus on enhancing your FTP. The process isn't that straight forward though as you have to type in a detailed prompt with a lot of context in order to get consistently good results. Then you still have to copy and paste the response into a file and save it ready for Zwift.
So I’ve been working on an interactive tool within Training Tilt that essentially uses the same process but abstracts away all the hard work. The tool is designed to capture workout preferences and communicate them to the AI model. This feature, though currently onlyl in development on my local machine, aims to simplify workout planning within Training Tilt.
The tool allows you to just input some parameters and leave it up to Tyler (our coach’s assistant) to come up with a workout or enter some "Advanced Instructions". Adding advanced instructions lets you provide detailed instructions about the desired workout structure. It enables you to have more control over the nature of your workouts. Although this functionality is driven by OpenAI's ChatGPT model, the focus is not on the model itself, but the seamless integration of AI within Training Tilt.
Additionally, the AI model has the potential to generate full-fledged training plans, although this is still in early stages of development. The idea is to eventually create structured training plans based on user inputs, which can then be saved to the training plan library or applied directly to an athlete.
For now this is all experimental but by the time I get back to New Zealand in early June after a short trip to Austin, Texas I hope to have this all up and running for coaches to start experimenting for themselves and hopefully willing to help me with feedback to continue to develop it further.
